Uses for Yohimbine

Yohimbine is a supplement that has been used for dietary purposes and for the treatment of sexual dysfunction. It has also been looked at as a remedy for type 2 diabetes but is so far inconclusive.

It is an alkaloid that has a stimulant, thus the usage for dietary and sexual dysfunction. When it is utilized for ED, it is labeled Yohimbine Hydrochloride and is a prescription medication. On the other hand, yohimbine bark can be purchased at health stores. The bark is used to brew tea to drink for an aphrodisiac. Other uses may be for weight loss and for xerostomia or dry mouth.

Yohimbine comes from the bark of an evergreen in West Africa. So yohimbine HCI, or indole alkaloid, is found in the bark, but the levels of the extract vary so it has the potential of being low. Currently in Africa, the tree is close to extinction in its natural habitat because of the demand for it globally.

Erectile Dysfunction

Yohimbine is used to treat ED and, in fact, is best known for that usage. You have to let your doctor know what other medications or supplements you are taking because there has been some concern about negative interaction. The dosage generally recommended for ED is 5.4 mg three times a day. It is not an immediate cure-all, but the individual will notice a difference in about two to three weeks.

Alpha-Blocker

Yohimbine works by increasing certain chemicals in the body so it is considered to be an alpha-blocker. These chemicals can dilate the pupils of the eye and dilate blood vessels so the blood flow is increased mainly to the penis to improve erectile function.

Side Effects

If a low dosage is taken, the side effects are not so likely. It is with yohimbine, as with other supplements, that the higher dosages are the ones causing the problems. In a higher dose, it may cause panic attacks, high blood pressure, insomnia, headaches and dizziness.

If you are pregnant or are breast-feeding, it is not recommended to take yohimbine. If you are taking any type of medicine for mental or mood dysfunction, they will interact negatively with yohimbine.

Dosage

Yohimbine is of the class of medications referred to as sympatholytics. Many things affect dosage, but it is generally anywhere from 5.4 to 6 mg three times a day. It can be taken with or without food. The body weight of the person taking it affects the dosage.
