A beginner’s guide to cannabis edibles

The old “pot brownie” will never disappear but today it is up against some very tough competition. There are many edibles available that never would have been thought of in the past, so many that you can almost address your specific mood with different cannabis edibles. If you feel a little depressed, turn to a peanut butter cookie, if you want to relax after a hard workout at the gym, try a little herbal ice cream.

Eating cannabis can be a welcome change from smoking it, especially for your respiratory system. It is more than just a change in the way you feel the effects, the effects may be considerably different than expected. As everyone knows, the active ingredient in cannabis is THC. Depending on how it is delivered the effects will be markedly different. If it is delivered at a temperature below boiling point, there is no effect at all; when it is smoked the effect is almost instant as it gets into your bloodstream through the lungs. Cannabis edibles are different again, the THC is released during the production of the cannabis oil which is that used for baked goods, the effect may take upwards of a half hour or more. This can be a problem, especially for first timers, they may try again thinking it isn’t working, the results can be unpredictable.

Most people who do enjoy cannabis edibles find that the high they get comes on more gradually and lasts longer than it does when the cannabis is smoked or taken as vapor. As cannabis edibles are discrete they can be consumed in places where it simply is impossible to smoke.

Because the way cannabis edibles affect different people differently the first experience might be totally unpredictable, there are a few things that you should bear in mind.

  • If you are not experienced with edibles start slowly, individual tolerance does not necessarily translate from smoking to ingesting.
  • Bear in mind that your body mass, age, weight and gender play a role in the effectiveness.
  • Never consume cannabis edibles on an empty stomach, think of them the same as you would a pain killer, it says on the label Take With Food, the same is true with cannabis edibles.

Casual users and those that know they have low tolerance should stick with a low dosage. Perhaps 10 mg is a good place to start. Eat a little and wait, see how you feel a half an hour later, you can always take more but you can’t take less.
