Finding the right Elderly Care assisted living home for your loved one is one of the most important decisions you will ever have to make. The decision of when, where, and even if your loved one is going to move to an assisted living home is totally up to you and your elderly loved one. There are some things you will not want to compromise on in your search for the perfect home for your loved one; read on to find out a few of them.

The first thing you should notice when you walk into an Elderly Care center is whether it smells fresh and clean. It should never, ever smell of urine or anything else that gives an unpleasant odor. There should be no trash in corners, floors should be clean, and the atmosphere happy and cheerful. You will want to ask housekeeping how often the residents personal space is cleaned, and don’t forget to ask about laundry service and maintenance procedures.

The best thing to do when going on a tour of a senior facility is to follow your nose. If an odor seems to be concentrated in only one area, it is a safe bet to assume it was a recent incident and has been taken care of. However, if the smells seem to be lingering in the whole community, there is probably a bigger problem going on. You should ask the manager of the community what the cause of the smell is and where it’s coming from. You do not want your loved one living in a community that is not clean and safe.

You always want to take your tour of a facility during the active time of day for the residents. You want to see how the residents are during the activities. Are they well attended? Does everyone seem to be having fun? You will also want to see how the staff interacts with the residents of the community. Choosing an assisted living community for your loved one should not be a rush job. Visit a few, take your time, and choose the perfect one together.
