The NEW Drug Epidemic

by | Oct 13, 2016 | Health

You see it in the movies, somebody snorting cocaine off the mirror through a rolled up bill or what Hollywood depicts as a real drug addict, somebody with shaky hands injecting themselves between their toes. Not to say that that isn’t the case in a great many instances but there is what may very well be a far greater and deadlier drug epidemic now. More and more people are now abusing prescription drug medications in order to self-medicate pain, exhaustion, anxiety, and virtually any other issue you can think of. There are some who only take these pills for fun, but more often than not people began taking them after they were prescribed legally by a doctor only to find themselves in over there head and dependent upon them. There are drug rehabs in Los Angeles that can help those people.

The Three Major Addictive Drugs

  • To begin with are the opioid painkillers. This is where you will find oxycodone, which is affectionately referred to as Hillbilly Heroin, Percocet, Vicodin, and Demerol to name a few. Those who have a legitimate reason to use these medications have a high risk for addiction particularly if they are using them in high doses, or for longer or more often than is prescribed, all of which is very easily done when your better judgment is clouded by pain.
  • People also tend to overuse stimulants such as Ritalin which is prescribed for ADD and ADHD along with Adderall and Dexedrine. Many college students, long-haul truckers, and parents, especially exhausted mothers, abuse these medications because of their ability to increase energy and concentration levels.
  • Benzodiazepines seem to be the newest trend in this epidemic. Among them you’ll find Valium, Xanax, and Klonopin all of which are sedatives used to treat insomnia and anxiety. They have a very relaxing and calming effect, particularly for those who are trying to come down from the stimulants.
